Barriers within education for newcomers

Description (English): 

With the involvement of key resource people, including newcomer youth, service providers and those working within education, we will discuss multiple issues that diverse newcomer populations experience in Canadian schools, including: the need to fulfill language requirements; the provision of misinformation by guidance counsellors and other school staff; other experiential barriers that often deter students from continuing on their trajectories of academic success.

Honouring Abilities: Refugees and Immigrants with Disabilities

Description (English): 

This workshop will examine the selection, reception and settlement experiences of refugees and immigrants with disabilities. The workshop will 1) Present first-person accounts of settling in Canada with a disability; 2) present examples of supports available and share examples of success stories; 3) address the issue of inclusion/exclusion based on medical needs or perceived disabilities and 4) offer the opportunity to explore and share resources for supporting persons with disabilities. We encourage participants to bring examples and/or displays from their own communities.

Bridging the Gap: Addressing intergenerational challenges in newcomer families

Participants at this workshop will hear from service providers from different regions of Canada who offer programs for youth, parents and families with the objective of mitigating some of these stresses. Presenters will discuss the family-oriented service models their organizations provide, as well as the challenges they face.

Re-empowering Strategies: A community mental health development model

This session will provide participants with an opportunity to learn about the community service model at the Canadian Centre for Victims of Torture. Participants will gain an understanding of the special mental health needs of refugees fleeing violence in their home countries. The workshop will also address the role of social and cultural identity and the importance of social networks in the therapy of refugees who are survivors of torture and war.

The UN Committee on the Rights of the Child

In September, the UN will examine Canada's compliance with the Convention on the Rights of the Child. Learn about the role of the Office of the Provincial Advocate in advancing the rights of children; including refugee/immigrant and first nations youth; familiarize yourselves with the UN examination process; discuss strategies for involving youth, and share experiences ensuring that newcomer youth and refugee youth enjoy their rights. We will refer to the specific issues identified by the UN Committee, gaining from the perspectives of the participants.
