Job offer: Policy and Campaign Manager – Asylum with Dignity

The Opportunity to ensure Asylum with Dignity

Canada for years has been welcoming and resettling refugees from many countries around the world. Yet we have no system to support people driven from their homes by violence and persecution who are asking for protection at our doorstep. At the same time we are weakening the legal foundations of our asylum system. The backtracking on due process and the lack of a fair and coordinated response from all levels of government fails those who have a right to asylum, puts local governments and community groups in short-term reaction mode, and leaves Canadians shocked that so many refugees end up homeless. CCR is calling for a National System for Asylum with Dignity and seeks to mobilize its members and allies to engage decision makers and the public to implement these solutions. We are looking for a Policy and Campaign manager to bring energy and strategic leadership to this campaign alongside other key advocacy priorities to advance refugee rights.

About the Canadian Council for Refugees

The Canadian Council for Refugees is a leading voice for the rights, protection, sponsorship, settlement, and well-being of refugees and migrants, in Canada and globally. CCR is driven by member organizations working with, from and for these communities from coast to coast to coast.

Committed to social justice and transformation by challenging racism, colonialism and intersecting oppressions, we undertake policy monitoring, advocacy, network building, and public education to empower members and communities to bring about systemic change.

About the role

Working under the supervision of the Co-Executive Director - Policy and Advocacy, the successful candidate will:

  • Convene and coordinate relevant member working groups and campaign subcommittees
  • Develop and help implement advocacy strategies that advance CCR strategic policy priorities
  • Monitor policy opportunities and ensure timely analysis, recommendations and commentary on identified CCR advocacy priorities
  • Support outreach and engagement with partners and external experts to inform and strengthen CCR advocacy and support relevant initiatives of allied campaigns
  • Contribute as part of a broader staff team to organizational planning and evaluation and to building a collaborative, positive and respectful work environment consistent with CCR’s mission, values and policies.

This is a full-time position (35 hours per week), with opportunities for occasional domestic travel and limited expectations for work on weekends and evenings. The position is based in Montreal and the selected candidate will be expected to work from CCR offices at least one day per week (per the current hybrid work model, subject to change).

Skills and experience

  • At least 3 years relevant experience in policy or advocacy work for social change, preferably in the non-profit sector.
  • Good instincts or a track record for generating consensus, influence and momentum in advocacy campaigns.
  • Experience in lobbying or engaging officials and elected representatives is an asset.
  • Very strong communications skills, both oral and written in English with capacity to work and communicate in French and a commitment for improvement if needed.
  • Good organizational skills and ability to work independently while accountable to a team.
  • Experience engaging with traditional and social media is an asset.
  • Knowledge of immigration, refugee and settlement issues is a strong asset.
  • Demonstrated commitment to human rights, social justice and anti-oppression.
  • Lived expertise as a refugee/immigrant is a strong asset.
