CCR Statement of Solidarity and Concern Regarding Mobilization and Attacks in Minnesota and the US

The Canadian Council for Refugees (CCR) stands in solidarity with the people of Minnesota and those across the United States who are standing up for the rights of migrants and refugees, even as their own lives are put at risk. That is what it means to look out for your neighbour.

People in Canada have watched in horror as Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents have escalated their continued violence against the people of Minnesota and across the U.S. The killing of seven individuals by immigration authorities over the past year, including the murder of Renee Nicole Good and Alex Pretti, and the death of over 30 people in ICE custody in the same period have made it more apparent than ever that the Trump administration is intent on allowing federal agents to act with impunity, instilling widespread fear among migrants and the wider population.

The terrifying scenes we are witnessing in Minneapolis are not isolated. These actions, which have sparked remarkable and courageous mobilizations across Minnesota and the United States, are part of the U.S. administration’s continued targeting of migrants and refugees. ICE’s inhumane and violent enforcement practices include abducting people from schools, homes, and workplaces, wide ranging abuses in detention facilities of migrants, including children, deporting people to third countries where they are at risk of torture and other harms, and meeting peaceful protest with deadly violence. These practices are making everyone less safe, regardless of immigration status, race, or class.

Canadians are not disconnected from these events. CCR is deeply concerned at reports that equipment and weapons procured in Canada, such as armoured vehicles, are being used in ICE’s deadly targeting of refugees and migrants. The Canadian government must ensure these exports cease to ensure Canada is not complicit in these grave violations of human rights.

These recent developments also once again underline that the United States cannot be considered a “safe” country for refugees, contrary to the Canadian government’s continued assertion as such. CCR reiterates its call for Canada to immediately withdraw from the Safe Third Country Agreement (STCA) and ensure that those in the United States seeking a safe haven can find protection in Canada from violence and persecution. The Canadian government must act now to uphold its international obligations and prevent further harm.

As people in Canada stand with Minnesotans, inspired by their unrelenting commitment to protect their neighbours, let us resolve to grow this solidarity at home, keep looking out for each other, and build a future where all families can thrive.
