Program Description  

 

The Daniel Schickedanz Scholarship Award Program supports young people from refugee and/or migrant backgrounds in pursuing higher education and contributing to positive change in their communities. 

Daniel Schickedanz believed that when young people are provided with opportunities and support, they can excel in their education and create meaningful social change. This scholarship recognizes the leadership, commitment, and potential of newcomer youth across Canada. 

The Daniel Schickedanz Scholarship Award Program is delivered through a partnership between the Canadian Lutheran World Relief (CLWR) and the Canadian Council for Refugees (CCR) and is overseen by the CCR Youth Network. 

The program supports young people as they: 

  • Pursue their educational goals and aspirations; 

  • Create positive social change in their communities; 

  • Prepare to become active citizens; 

  • Promote diversity, inclusion, and the rights of refugees and migrants. 

The Daniel Schickedanz Scholarship Award Program is a 10-year initiative supporting youth leadership and educational opportunities from 2021 to 2030. 

Details  

In 2026, ten (10) scholarships will be awarded. 

Each scholarship recipient will receive $815 CAD. 

Priority will be given for First-Time Recipients 

The scholarships will be awarded through two streams: 

 

1. Educational Commitment Stream 

Five scholarships will be awarded to youth who demonstrate commitment to their educational journey. 

This stream recognizes young people who are pursuing education, overcoming barriers, and working toward their future goals. 

Applicants may demonstrate: 

  • Commitment to continuing or improving their education; 

  • Educational goals and aspirations; 

  • How their experiences have shaped their learning journey; 

  • How financial support will help them achieve their goals. 

Applicants may be currently completing high school, preparing to enter post-secondary education, or already enrolled in full-time or part-time studies. 

 

2. Community Engagement Stream 

Five scholarships will be awarded to youth who demonstrate meaningful involvement and commitment to their communities. 

This stream recognizes young people who use their time, skills, and leadership to support others and create positive change. 

Applicants may demonstrate: 

  • Volunteer experience and community involvement; 

  • Leadership and initiative; 

  • Contributions that support inclusion, diversity, refugee, and migrant communities; 

  • Commitment to continuing their community engagement. 

Eligibility Criteria 

Applicants must meet all of the following requirements: 

Applicants must: 

  • Be between 16 and 25 years old at the time of application; 

  • Identify as a migrant or newcomer youth (not born in Canada); 

  • Reside in Canada and be one of the following: 

  • A Canadian citizen; 

  • A permanent resident; 

  • A Convention Refugee (Protected Person); or 

  • A non-status person living in Canada at the time of application; 

  • Provide all required supporting documents.
