The Daniel Schickedanz Scholarship Award Program

Program Description 

Daniel Schickedanz’s belief in youth is rooted in his own experience that if given opportunity & support, youth can excel in their education and contribute to a positive social change in society. The Daniel Schickedanz Scholarship Award supports young people of refugee and/or migrant background in their efforts to pursue higher education. It encourages youth engagement within their local communities.

The Daniel Schickedanz Scholarship Award is facilitated through the collaborative efforts of Canadian Lutheran World Relief (CLWR) and the Canadian Council for Refugees (CCR).

The program will be in place for 10 years. The purpose of the program is to support young people as they:

  • Play a role in creating positive social change, and 
  • Prepare to be active citizens promoting diversity and advocating for refugee and migrant rights.
Details 
  • Ten scholarships will be available per year. Five (5) of them will be awarded on an educational basis and five (5) of them will be awarded on a community-engagement basis.
  • Each scholarship is valued at $715.00 CAD  in 2023.
  • Applications open on September 11, 2023 and close on October 16, 2023.
  • The CCR Youth Network Core Team  will review the applications and select applicants based on the criteria below, along two streams: a) educational commitment and b) community engagement.

Educational Bursary
Description

The Canadian Council for Refugees’ Youth Network acknowledges the effects that one’s background (social, political, economic or cultural) can have on their education; hence, we use ‘academic improvement’ herein to recognize this diversity of backgrounds and one’s commitment in improving their academics.  

An eligible applicant must:  

  • Be aged 16 - 25 years old 
  • Identify as a migrant or newcomer (not born in Canada) 
  • Reside in Canada and be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or a convention refugee (protected person) or a non-status person living in Canada at the writing of this scholarship application 
  • Be in high school, planning to enter, or already enrolled full or part time studies in any discipline/program at an accredited high school or post-secondary institution or affiliate (universities, colleges, CEGEP)
  • Be able to provide all supporting documents 
  • Demonstrate commitment to their studies and career goals

Community-based Bursary
Description

An eligible applicant must:  

  • Be aged 16 - 25 years old
  • Identify as a migrant or newcomer (not born in Canada)
  • Reside in Canada and be a Canadian citizen,  permanent resident or a convention refugee (protected person) or a non-status person living in Canada at the writing of this scholarship application
  • Plan to continue their community engagement/volunteerism for the year 2022-2023
  • Be able to demonstrate a commitment to community-engagement and volunteerism in their community. *Commitment herein means that the person concerned should demonstrate a one (1) year record of volunteerism/community-engagement (i.e., since 2021).
  • Provide a letter from a community organization stating that you are a volunteer. The letter must include confirmation that you are currently volunteering with the organization and describe how have you contributed to the mission of the organization
  • Be able to provide all supporting documents
