What makes an effective story for change when it comes to refugee issues in Canada? What makes the difference between a basic story and a story that creates change? This interactive workshop will look at how to effectively engage refugee voices to influence public opinion.

Bridging the Gap: Addressing intergenerational challenges in newcomer families

The processes of migration, settlement and resettlement introduce stressors that can have huge impacts on the family unit. Participants at this workshop will hear from service providers from different regions of Canada who offer programs for youth, parents and families with the objective of mitigating some of these stresses. Presenters will discuss the family-oriented service models their organizations provide, as well as the challenges they face.

This workshop will look at the common challenges faced by small francophone centres outside Quebec, and aims to present affordable solutions. Issues in rural areas, such as employability, transportation and education will be discussed. This will be an interactive workshop.

Re-empowering Strategies: A community mental health development model

This session will provide participants with an opportunity to learn about the community service model at the Canadian Centre for Victims of Torture. Participants will gain an understanding of the special mental health needs of refugees fleeing violence in their home countries. The workshop will also address the role of social and cultural identity and the importance of social networks in the therapy of refugees who are survivors of torture and war.

Privacy issues and Refugees

The workshop will address the privacy concerns of refugees as they access the refugee determination process in Canada. Panelists will discuss: the manner in which refugees must interact with federal, provincial, municipal agencies and private institutions; the manner in which privacy rights are protected by the Immigration and Refugee Board; and the challenges refugees face when they believe their privacy rights have been violated.

Detention and Removal of People with Mental Health Issues

This workshop will consider: 1) Convention Refugees and the opinion process required to carry out removals to countries of persecution, including risk assessment and H & C applications; 2) the treatment of removals on the basis of criminality, when there are underlying mental health issues; and 3) the practical barriers present in representing incarcerated people with mental health issues.

Bill C-31 Part I – What now?

Following on the morning's pleanry session on the bill, this workshop will provide an opportunity to take stock of its principal elements, where things stand, what happens next, and the implications for refugees and the CCR. (Note: This workshop is closed to government and media representatives.)

Root causes of forced displacement: CCR strategies for advocacy

Description (English): 

“Democracy movements” in the Middle East have resulted in large-scale displacement of civilians. Resource development and agricultural projects supported by western interests have displaced many people from their land. Ethnic conflicts have created winners and losers, and with them refugee flows, on every continent. How can CCR's advocacy for the displaced address the causal factors and demand accountability from those responsible?
This workshop explores CCR's role in addressing root causes in our international advocacy. Presentations will be followed by strategizing in small groups to define CCR's role in the current environment, and to develop practical responses to current issues.

Overcoming Systemic Discrimination in Overseas Practices

This workshop will explore: how 'neutral' policies in overseas processing can have discriminatory impacts; how lack of transparency and accountability impacts particularly vulnerable populations; and the role that Canadian and overseas advocates can play in bringing accountability to the overseas protection system.

The UN Committee on the Rights of the Child

In September, the UN will examine Canada's compliance with the Convention on the Rights of the Child. Learn about the role of the Office of the Provincial Advocate in advancing the rights of children; including refugee/immigrant and first nations youth; familiarize yourselves with the UN examination process; discuss strategies for involving youth, and share experiences ensuring that newcomer youth and refugee youth enjoy their rights. We will refer to the specific issues identified by the UN Committee, gaining from the perspectives of the participants.

Rocking the Boat and Creating Change: An Advocacy Training Workshop

This training workshop will provide participants with information, ideas and strategies for advocating and influencing change. Presenters will share their knowledge about systems of information and different advocacy strategies that can be used to better organize, rock the boat and create change. Building on our campaign in opposition to Bill C-31, participants will gain a stronger understanding of parliamentary processes, effective use of access to information requests and existing research. In addition, participants will hear examples of effective strategies for using social media, grassroots campaigning and organizing creative direct actions and brainstorm for ideas on a successful campaign to oppose changes to the Interim Federal Health Program.
