Humanitarian crisis in Horn of Africa needs strong Canadian response

The Canadian Council for Refugees today added its voice to calls by Somali Canadians for Canada to show strong leadership in responding to the humanitarian crisis in the Horn of Africa.

Thousands of people have fled conflict and famine in Somalia. Children are dying from starvation before they can reach safety.

Reintroduction of anti-refugee bill deplored

 

The Canadian Council for Refugees today expressed its profound disappointment at the reintroduction of a bill that has been widely condemned as violating the basic rights of refugees. Despite the government’s claims that the bill targets smugglers, the people who will be punished if it is passed are the people fleeing persecution, including children.

Federal Court rules refugees in Cairo unfairly rejected by Canada

 

The Canadian Council for Refugees today welcomed the Federal Court’s ruling that four Eritrean refugees were unfairly refused by the Canadian visa office in Cairo.

The four cases are representative cases of a group of 40 Eritreans, all rejected by the same visa officer.

Eritrean refugees awaiting Federal Court decision suffer acute hardship in Cairo

 

Eritrean refugees unfairly refused by Canada struggle to survive in Cairo, reported the Canadian Council for Refugees today.  A year and a half after their rejection by Canada’s Cairo office, their cases will finally be heard this week by the Federal Court in Toronto.

Changes to the Temporary Foreign Worker Program Leave Workers Unprotected

The Canadian Council for Refugees today expressed its disappointment that upcoming changes to the Temporary Foreign Worker Regulations do not adequately protect migrant workers.  The changes come into force on 1 April 2011.
