Principles of Private Sponsorship of Refugees Program Challenged by Ongoing Changes

French title:
Les enjeux du parrainage privé
Description (English):

Basic principles of the Private Sponsorship of Refugees (PSR) program such as the right to name who may be sponsored, that PSR refugees are to be in addition to GAR numbers and a globally focused program, and is to be carried out in partnership with the government of Canada are all being eroded. Discussion will focus on how this is becoming a government controlled resettlement program. The result will be that private sponsors will have less opportunity, as representatives of civil society, to respond to refugees that they believe deserve sponsorship along with those identified by the UNHCR. The workshop will also explore how best to use the limited allocations of sponsorship spaces and how the CCR can most effectively support the PSR program.

Horn of Africa

French title:
La Corne d'Afrique
Description (English):

Conditions are dire in refugee camps in the East African region. So bad, in fact, that many refugees take their chances in the Sinai desert or on the high seas. At the same time, the Government of Canada has decided not to resettle any more Somali refugees. This workshop sheds light on the denial of basic human rights in the camps where refugees have the choice of staying indefinitely or risking their lives to get somewhere else. How can we help, what can we do?
