At its September 2010 meeting, the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) adopted a resolution calling on the federal government to end refugee transportation loans.

Brought forward by Surrey City Council, which passed a similar resolution in 2009, the text reads:

SED10.3.06
TERMINATION OF THE TRANSPORTATION LOAN PROGRAM FOR REFUGEES

RESOLVED That the Federation of Canadian Municipalities urge the Government of Canada to immediately cancel all outstanding refugee transportation and pre-entry medical loan debt and to cease seeking repayment of the transportation and pre-entry medical costs for new Government Assisted Refugees coming to Canada."

-----

The FCM will be writing to the Minister of Citizenship and Immigration calling on the government to end the burden of transportation loans for refugees in Canada.

Join the Federation of Canadian Municipalities and write to the Minister of Citizenship and Immigration with your concerns about refugee transportation loans.  Invite others, including your Member of Parliament, to do the same.  The greater the voices calling for the government's policy to change the better.
