NB all figures come from Citizenship and Immigration Canada. Because figures are frequently revised, there are variations in the exact figure depending on the source consulted.
Explanation of columns:
Total immigration = total number of people, both refugees and immigrants, granted permanent residence in Canada.
Government-assisted refugees = number of refugees selected abroad and resettled in Canada with assistance from the government. Includes people in refugee-like situations ("Designated Classes" before 1997 and from 1997 Humanitarian Designated Classes). Also includes Joint Assistance Sponsorships where both government and the private sponsors took responsibility for the sponsorship.
Privately sponsored refugees = number of refugees selected abroad and resettled in Canada under the sponsorship of a private group. Like government-assisted refugees, this category includes people in refugee-like situations.
Total resettled = sum of government assisted refugees and privately sponsored refugees.
Refugees landed in Canada = number of refugees granted permanent residence within Canada (mostly after making a refugee claim and being recognized as refugees by the Immigration and Refugee Board, but also includes refugees granted permanent residence after being brought to Canada on a Minister's permit).
Dependants of refugees abroad = number of grants of permanent residence
to immediate family members abroad of refugees landed in Canada (since
1993 Convention Refugees recognized by the Immigration and Refugee Board
have been able to include spouse and
dependant children on their application for permanent residence, even
if these family members are not in Canada).
Total refugee = sum of total resettled, refugees landed in Canada and dependants of refugees abroad.
Total non-refugee immigration = number of people grated permanent residence in Canada minus total refugee.
Percentage refugee = Total refugee as a percentage of total immigration.
