Talk to Action: Building a  National Newcomer Youth Advocacy Agenda

December 2020 – March 2021

What is Talk to Action?

Rooted in the Canadian Council for Refugees (CCR) Youth Network’s goals to amplify newcomer youth voices and build capacity among organizations to support youth engagement, the Talk to Action initiative is designed to foster dialogues among  newcomer and refugee youth (16 to 25 year-olds living in Canada for up to 10 years) to discuss strengths and barriers, as well as the systemic changes that need to take place in order to improve the lives of newcomer youth. Together, we draw from these talks to develop a youth-led national advocacy agenda with recommendations for how to address the needs of newcomer and refugee youth.

What are the advantages of participating for youth?

  • Develop leadership skills
  • Learn how to strategize, develop and communicate clear advocacy goals and have influence at systemic levels
  • Connect with other newcomer youth across Canada,
  • Learn from each other and develop innovative ways to engage other youth, and
  • Promote youth leadership at the Youth Action Gathering, a national gathering of youths from across Canada.

Who can participate?

  • Any organization or group that serves newcomer youth (16 to 25 year-olds living in Canada for up to 10 years).
  • Groups will need a mentor (staff person/volunteer) within the organization whose role will be: to  support youth recruitment, to ensure making the youths have the resources that they need, and to be being present during the Talk to Action session. The mentor will liaise with the CCR Youth Network coordinator.

What will we have to do?

  • The first 16 organizations to apply will be selected to host a Talk to Action session between January and February 2021.
  • You hold a session with 10 to15 newcomer youth participants(16 to 25 year-olds living in Canada for up to 10 years).
  • Following the session, you share your findings and recommendations by filling out a report template due by 05 March 2021.
  • Your report is  presented by the Core Team chairs at CCR Executive meetings and Working Groups.
  • Youth will be invited to represent their group at the Youth Action Gathering and share their ideas from the discussion in a panel with other youth from across the country.

What will CCR provide?

  • A member of the Youth Network Core Team facilitates the Talk to Action session.
  • The CCR Youth Network sends you a template report to be filled out by the group following the Talk to Action session (due by 05 March 2021).
  • Youth participants in your sessions present their findings in the CCR’s national platform.
  • The CCR shares the findings in the Youth Network’s social media, at the national Youth Action Gathering and at Executive meetings with the CCR.
