Online cheers from progressive refugee activists rippled across Twitter and Facebook on Wednesday, May 9. On that day, Jason Kenney, the minister for citizenship, immigration and multiculturalism, announced that a few of the most "controversial" components of his new refugee omnibus bill—such as the proposition that refugees over the age of 16 who arrive in a group would be detained for up to a year without any sort of appeal—would be replaced from the sure-to-be-passed legislation with something a little less draconian.
