Applications for sponsors

To sponsor a refugee to come to Canada, it is necessary for the sponsor and the refugee to each complete an application. This section covers the application process for sponsors, including who is eligible, what are their responsibilities, and what forms need to be filled out.

The program options are listed seperately below because the requirements for each are different. For a more detailed overview, see the section Different program options to sponsor refugees

For sponsors applying from any province or territory OTHER than Quebec:

Sponsorship Agreement Holders

Selected organizations have a formal agreement with the government to sponsor a certain number of refugees each year. 

This resource does not provide additional information about partnering with a Sponsorship Agreement Holders (SAH) because each one operates differently. It is necessary to contact them individually to find out who they collaborate with, their application process, and any other conditions that may apply. SAHs are able to formally partner with individuals or organizations (often referred to as Constituent Groups).

Group of 5

A group of 5 permanent residents or citizens who meet certain income and status requirements can join together to sponsor one or more refugees.

Community Sponsor

An organization (for-profit/not-for-profit, incorporated/non-incorporated) which is able to show both financial and settlement capacity can sponsor one or more refugees, either on its own or with a co-sponsor (an individual or another organization).

Note!

Regardless of which program option a sponsor chooses, the application forms to be completed by the refugee will be the same. 

 

For sponsors applying from within Quebec:

Organizations with an umbrella agreement

Certain organizations have a formal agreement with the government to present a certain number of sponsorship applications every year. 

This resource does not provide additional information about applying as a sponsor with an organization with an umbrella agreement as each one operates differently. There is no public list of organizations, but a partial list can be found here. It is necessary to contact them individually to find out who they collaborate with, their application process, and any other conditions that may apply.  

Group of 2 to 5

A group of 2 to 5 permanent residents or citizens who meet certain income and status requirements can join together to sponsor one or more refugees.

A non-profit organization which has a sufficient budget and meets certain incorporation requirements can sponsor one or more refugees, either on its own or with an individual as a co-sponsor.
