8 Feb 2012 In 2009, the Harper government announced a special resettlement program for Afghans who had worked closely with Canadian soldiers and diplomats in that troubled country. Afghans who had worked with the Canadians for at least 12 consecutive months, and could demonstrate that they faced significant risk of violence for having collaborated with Westerners, could apply to relocate themselves and their families to Canada. All the typical security and health screenings any other refugee would face would still apply, but the program was a special offer to the front of the line for those who put themselves and their loved ones at risk to co-operate with the government of Canada.
